How I Move
One question I get a lot is… what do you do for exercise?
Well, to be frank, I don’t like to exercise! At least in the current societal understanding of the word. A physical therapist who dislikes exercise! Our societal notion of exercise has shifted with constant pressures to do more. More intense, more weight, more equipment. To compete and compare ourselves with others.
I want share with you that exercise is much more than gym memberships and weight lifting. Exercise is “any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness.” So we need to restructure the way we think about exercise. Going forward, I want to re-phrase exercise as movement. This allows us the opportunity to feel comfortable moving our bodies and the compassion to accept that how we are moving is great, and to continue to strive to grow and expand our movement.
So… to come back to the question at hand, what do I do for movement?
- I love to walk and hike.
- I love to swim.
- I love to stretch.
- I love using body weight.
- I love to use my basic tools.
That’s it! That’s how I move!
Movement doesn’t require much, and definitely doesn’t include competition and comparison. All movements are welcome and I look forward to learning more about how YOU move and provide you with simple techniques and specific “exercises” that are safe and effective in enhancing your wellness.
The other important take away is self love and acceptance. Every body is different, every body is perfectly imperfect. Every body has imperfections and faults and therefore every body needs a unique and personalized movement program in order to properly function.
Love your body and accept it for its imperfections! Expand your physical and mental capacity while enhancing your wellness.
